Antique Rocking Chairs
The first rocking chairs were
originally stationary chairs that had rockers added to them.
Not until the early 1800s did chairs built with rockers
become widespread. In addition, rocking chairs were
particularly popular in the United States. It is a pertinent
anecdote that Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John
Wilkes Booth while sitting in a Victorian rocking chair at
Ford’s Theatre. Napoleon
kept his rocker in the bedroom of his Italian residence at
Portoferraio, Elba. John F. Kennedy used his rocking chair
as therapy to ease his back pain from a war injury. He owned
several rockers and bought many as gifts for friends and
heads of state.

Chairs, Love Seats, & Sofas Until the 20th
century a couch referred to a long upholstered seat
with one end inclined, high enough to provide a back
and head-rest. "Couch" which in the Late Middle Ages
had signified bedding was interchangeable with
"daybed" through the 17th century. Further back in ancient Roman society, the couch was
found in the dining room (known as the triclinium).
Three couches would be arranged around a low table
and the men would recline while eating (although the
women sat in normal chairs). A chaise longue is an
upholstered couch in the shape of a chair that is
long enough to support the legs.
